What is Maca?Updated 12 days ago

Maca (Lepidium meyenii) is a root vegetable native to the Peruvian Andes and has been cultivated for over 2,000 years. It thrives at altitudes above 3,500 meters and is one of the few plants that can withstand the harsh conditions of the Andes. Traditionally, the Andean people consumed maca as both a food and a medicinal plant. In recent years, maca has gained popularity for its potential effects on libido and vitality.

Although all maca comes from the same plant, the skin—where most bioactive compounds are found—can develop different colors. Each color has a slightly different composition and, therefore, distinct benefits. The three most common varieties are:

🟡 Yellow: The most cultivated and versatile type, traditionally used for general support.

🔴 Red: Traditionally associated with feminine or internal energy – nourishing and balancing.

⚫ Black: The rarest variety, traditionally linked to masculine or external energy – strengthening and revitalizing.
